Thunderstorm Warning for Six States and Labuan Until 1 AM: Staying Safe in Stormy Weather

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued a thunderstorm warning for six states and Labuan until 1 am, Bernama reports. I only saw the headline, so I do not know which states are included, so readers should check MetMalaysia's website or app for the specific areas.

Thunderstorms can bring heavy rain, lightning and strong winds, and in the monsoon transition period they are common in the afternoon and evening. Heavy rain may cause flash floods in low-lying and urban areas, while strong winds can topple trees and damage roofs. Earlier this month, the department warned that this transition period brings risks of thunderstorms, flash floods and fallen trees.

Safety during a thunderstorm begins with simple rules. Stay indoors if possible and avoid open fields, hilltops and isolated trees. Do not shelter under a tree or beside metal structures, and stay away from water because lightning can travel through it. If you are driving, slow down, turn on your headlights and avoid parking under large trees or near flood-prone roads. Unplug sensitive electronics if you can do so safely.

After the storm, be careful. Fallen cables, flooded roads and weakened trees can still be dangerous, and drains may carry debris. Report hazards to local authorities, and help neighbours who may be elderly or have mobility problems. The warning also arrives at a time when some areas are dealing with floods, including Pangkor, so extra rain could worsen conditions. Keep your phone charged, follow official social media accounts and have an emergency contact list ready. If the warning is extended, authorities will issue updates through their usual channels.
