Fahmi Wants Siti Nurhaliza to Keep Shining and Promote Traditional Music Worldwide

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has expressed the hope that singer Siti Nurhaliza will keep shining and promote Malaysian traditional music around the world, Bernama reports. I only saw the headline, so I do not know the occasion for his remarks or whether they were linked to an award or event.

Siti Nurhaliza has been one of Malaysia's best-known artists for decades, with a career that has included pop, ballads and traditional-inspired songs. When a minister encourages a well-known artist to promote traditional music, it reflects a broader government interest in using culture as a form of soft power and in preserving heritage.

Traditional music faces familiar challenges in a fast-changing media world. Younger audiences have many choices, and live performance venues and training programmes may be limited. At the same time, streaming platforms and social media have created new ways for traditional styles to reach global listeners, particularly when artists blend them with contemporary sounds.

What can ordinary people do to support traditional music? Attend live performances, buy or stream recordings, take part in workshops and encourage children to learn instruments such as the gamelan, kompang or sape. Schools and community centres can invite performers to demonstrate and teach. Artists need audiences and fair payment to continue their work, and legal channels for listening help them earn a living. If you are interested in the topic, look for festivals and cultural events in your area and support local musicians. The minister's comments are an encouragement, and the real test will be sustained support for artists and heritage programmes.
