Malaysia has a new Indian envoy who is promising to deepen the relationship. Bernama reports that India's new High Commissioner, Somnath Ghosh, reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries. I have only seen the headline and the opening line, so I do not know the details of his remarks.
Malaysia and India have long historical, cultural and economic links. A large Malaysian community has Indian heritage, trade between the two countries is substantial, and there is cooperation in areas such as education, technology, healthcare and tourism. A new High Commissioner is the head of India's diplomatic mission and typically meets ministers, business leaders and community groups soon after arrival.
The phrase strategic ties suggests a broad range of cooperation, from defence and security dialogue to trade and investment. It comes as Malaysia explores defence industry cooperation with Japan and is working on trade agreements with the EU and Thailand, which shows that the country is actively diversifying its partnerships. I do not know whether specific projects with India were mentioned.
For Malaysians, bilateral ties can influence things such as visas, student exchanges, investment and cultural events. Business owners who are interested in India can look for programmes by trade agencies and chambers of commerce. People with relatives or business in India should follow announcements from the embassy about consular services. The new envoy's early meetings are likely to set the tone for his tenure. Watch for announcements of visits, trade missions and agreements in the coming months.
