France Extends Curfews and Boosts Police Presence After Riots Torch Buildings and Loot Thousands of Businesses

France is tightening its response to the unrest that swept the country over the weekend. CBS News reports that French authorities are extending curfews and increasing the police presence in public spaces as President Emmanuel Macron's government tries to regain control, after rioters torched buildings and looted thousands of businesses. Bernama, quoting the German news agency dpa, says that curfews imposed across France have calmed the situation, though I only saw the first line of that report.

The figures show the scale of the damage. Thousands of looted businesses means that many shopkeepers, from small family shops to larger stores, are counting losses, and the cost to insurers and local authorities is likely to be large. Earlier reports said that more than 1,800 people had been arrested, and that leaders blamed an ultra-left movement for part of the violence, a claim that is the government's own account.

Extending curfews is a sign that the authorities do not yet consider the situation fully safe. Curfews can help to prevent night-time looting and arson, but they also restrict the lives of ordinary residents, including workers who travel at night and families in affected neighbourhoods. Their length and scope will be closely watched, as will any legal challenges.

Behind the violence lie genuine grievances about living costs and school conditions, which brought hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets peacefully before the unrest escalated. The government now has to restore order while showing that it is listening. Watch for decisions on compensation for affected businesses, the number of people charged, and whether unions and student groups call for new marches. The political fallout may also shape debate in the run-up to France's 2027 presidential election.
