ASEAN Must Unite to Protect Children From Growing Online Threats, Says Fahmi; Malaysia and Indonesia Agree to Expand Child Safety Cooperation

Malaysia is pushing for a regional response to online harm. Bernama reports that Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said ASEAN must unite to protect children from growing online threats. Separate Bernama reports say that Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to strengthen cooperation on online child safety, that Singapore could potentially join the initiative, and that Malaysia plans to meet Singapore in December to discuss online safety cooperation.

Children face a range of risks online, including cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, grooming by predators, scams and excessive screen time. Because platforms operate across borders, a single country's rules can be difficult to enforce, which is why regional cooperation is attractive. Joint approaches can include sharing information, aligning standards and pressing technology companies to improve protections.

I have only seen the headlines and short summaries, so I do not know whether the discussions involve specific measures such as age limits, verification systems or reporting mechanisms. The Philippines' lower house recently approved a measure to ban access to social media for children under 13, which shows that governments in the region are exploring different tools. Malaysia and Indonesia have different legal systems and priorities, so agreeing on details may take time.

Parents do not need to wait for regulation. Talk to children about what they see online, set clear rules about devices, use privacy and parental-control settings and encourage them to tell you if something makes them uncomfortable. Report harmful content to the platform and, where appropriate, to the authorities. Schools can support with digital literacy lessons. Watch for the December meeting with Singapore and for any joint statement from ASEAN communications ministers, which should show how far the cooperation will go.
