Melaka Polls: Barisan Nasional Ready to Invite Perikatan Nasional Into State Government if It Wins

Barisan Nasional (BN) says it is ready to invite Perikatan Nasional (PN) to join it in forming the Melaka state government if the coalition wins the 16th Melaka State Election on November 14. The statement came from BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Sunday (November 1) and was reported by Bernama and The Star.

Speaking to reporters in Bagan Datuk after attending a Deepavali event at the UMNO hall there, Zahid said the approach was meant to respect the people's mandate as well as the political understanding reached between the two coalitions. He pointed to what happened in Negri Sembilan, where appointments were honoured after the government was formed so that Perikatan representatives became part of the administration.

Zahid also recalled the earlier Melaka Unity Government, in which partners from Pakatan Harapan were appointed as state executive councillors and deputy executive councillors, although they later decided to leave. According to him, the same offer would be extended to Perikatan assemblymen who win their respective seats, should BN be in a position to form the government.

Seats and key dates

Based on the report, BN is contesting 23 of the 28 seats up for grabs, while Perikatan is contesting five. The Election Commission has fixed November 14 as polling day, with early voting scheduled for November 10. Bernama has also set up a dedicated page to track the latest updates on the election.

Why it matters

The remark adds to a growing conversation about how political alliances may line up at state level, even as parties cooperate in different ways at the federal level. Melaka and Sarawak are heading to the polls in a stretch that The Star's interactive describes as making a record 11 state elections, and Pakatan Harapan has named Adly Zahari as its chief minister candidate in Melaka. Whether any post-election cooperation becomes necessary will depend entirely on how voters cast their ballots, so the final seat tally on polling night will be the real test of today's statements.
