A federal investigation has reportedly touched a well-known Trump adviser. CBS News reports, citing sources, that the Justice Department is investigating Corey Lewandowski over his role at the Department of Homeland Security. The report was published about an hour before I fetched the page, and I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the nature of the inquiry or what conduct is being examined.
Reports that someone is under investigation are not proof of wrongdoing. Investigations can end without charges, and the person involved is entitled to respond. The words over his role at DHS suggest that the inquiry concerns his activities related to the department, which could include his status, his dealings with contractors or other matters, but these are possibilities and not facts from the report.
The story fits a broader pattern of news about legal and ethical scrutiny in Washington. In the same week, federal prosecutors charged a Virginia Democratic lawmaker in an alleged drug scheme, a judge ruled that the president must sit for a deposition in a defamation case and the Pentagon banned the use of nonpublic information for betting. These cases are unrelated, but they illustrate the range of legal issues in the news.
For readers, it is wise to wait for official statements and court filings before drawing conclusions, and to compare reports from several outlets, since anonymous sourcing can sometimes be incomplete. Both supporters and critics of any administration may be quick to see political motives, so facts and documents are more reliable guides. Watch for responses from Lewandowski, DHS and the Justice Department, and for any indication of whether a grand jury or other steps are involved.
