Melaka Polls: BN to Announce Candidates Together With PAS and Its Strategic Partners, Says Zahid

The shape of the Melaka election contest is becoming clearer. Bernama reports that Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the coalition will announce its candidates together with PAS and its strategic partners. I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the date of the announcement, the seat allocation or what form the cooperation will take.

The headline marks a notable development in Malaysian politics, since it points to cooperation between BN and PAS for the state election. Earlier this month, Zahid said that BN was firm on defending 21 seats and open to talks on seven, and I do not know how those numbers relate to the new arrangement. Readers should look for the formal announcement, which will clarify who contests where.

Another Bernama analysis published yesterday says that a fallout between PAS and Bersatu could undermine the opposition, according to analysts. That suggests a changing landscape in which former allies may compete and new alliances may form. The Melaka assembly has 28 seats, so small shifts in cooperation can affect the outcome in closely fought constituencies.

For voters, the changing alliances can be confusing. The best approach is to look at the candidate and the manifesto and to ask how each party plans to deal with local issues such as the cost of living, tourism, jobs and flooding. Check that your voter registration is correct and find out where you will vote. Watch for the Election Commission's announcement of nomination and polling dates, for candidate lists and for how the campaign is conducted. Respectful debate benefits voters of all views.
