Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has confirmed what many political observers suspected: his party has been quietly holding talks with several other parties about a possible new political alignment before the 16th general election. He was careful to stress that no final decision has been made, but the direction of travel is clear — Bersatu is shopping around for partners after its formal cooperation with PAS came to an end back in June.
Muhyiddin framed the party's openness fairly broadly, saying Bersatu is willing to work with any group that respects its core principles, without naming specific candidates for a new coalition. He also went out of his way to separate these coalition talks from a recent court outcome, after the High Court discharged and acquitted him of four out of seven charges connected to the Jana Wibawa programme, including one involving an alleged RM200 million bribe. He insisted the two developments have nothing to do with each other.
With the PAS partnership over and general election season inching closer, Bersatu's next move on the coalition front is likely to shape how competitive the opposition landscape looks heading into GE16.
