Cheras Landslide Reminds Us That Building Safety Cannot Be Taken for Granted

For residents of an apartment building in Cheras, what would normally have been another ordinary day quickly became a worrying period of evacuation and uncertainty.

Residents of Block D at Damai Perdana Apartments were evacuated following a landslide, with an underground water leak among the suspected contributing factors being investigated. Authorities subsequently began technical assessments to establish whether the affected structure remained safe.

Officials indicated that the assessments could take several days, meaning affected residents might need to remain away from their homes while specialists determine whether it is safe for them to return.

From the outside, evacuation may sound like a relatively straightforward safety precaution. For the people involved, however, it is much more complicated.

A home contains documents, medication, clothing, children's belongings and countless other things required for normal life. Families may suddenly have to think about temporary accommodation, transportation to work and school, pets and elderly relatives.

Authorities are therefore right to put physical safety first, but communication is almost equally important.

Residents need reliable updates explaining what engineers are checking, what risks have been identified, when another assessment will be conducted and where assistance can be obtained. Information should be communicated even when investigators do not yet have a definitive answer.

The incident also raises broader questions about urban maintenance.

Water leaks, drainage conditions, slopes, retaining structures and ground movement can develop gradually. Their seriousness may not always be visible to residents until a significant failure occurs.

That does not mean we should speculate about the cause of this particular landslide before technical investigations are completed. It does mean local authorities, developers, building management bodies and residents should treat warning signs seriously.

The sensible public reaction is therefore neither panic nor premature blame.

Let engineers establish what happened. Make residents' immediate safety and welfare the priority. Once the cause has been determined, authorities should explain the findings transparently and identify any corrective work required.

A landslide should not merely become yesterday's headline once residents return home. If lessons can be learned about inspection, drainage or maintenance, they should be applied elsewhere before another community faces the same frightening experience.
