A quiet corner of Gloucestershire turned into a major incident on Sunday. Police arrested five men on suspicion of explosives offences and preparing an act of terrorism near RAF Fairford, an air base U.S. forces have used for operations against Iran. It began with a tip-off just before one in the morning about three suspicious vans heading toward the base. Homes in Whelford were evacuated while bomb disposal teams examined the vehicles.
On Monday, police released the men on bail, saying they remain under investigation. All are British citizens from London, aged between 23 and 25. Detectives are exploring several lines of inquiry, including possible links to Iran, Russia or non-state groups, though the Iranian embassy rejects any connection. Reports say no viable explosives were found. President Trump praised the arrests, while several British outlets suggested local vigilance played a big part. Plenty is still unclear, so caution is wise.
