The long-running corruption case against Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has hit another procedural pause. The Court of Appeal recently agreed to stay a hearing on additional evidence from a key prosecution witness, putting things on hold until the Federal Court decides on the prosecution's separate appeal. Notably, both sides consented to the delay, which suggests neither party is in a rush to complicate the case further before the higher court weighs in.
For those who've lost track of the details, Rosmah was convicted back in 2022 on three corruption charges tied to a RM1.25 billion solar hybrid project meant to supply electricity to hundreds of rural schools in Sarawak. Prosecutors argued she solicited a massive sum and personally received millions more from a company executive through a former aide, all in exchange for help securing the contract. She was sentenced to ten years in prison on each charge, running concurrently, along with a fine in the hundreds of millions, though she's remained free on a stay of execution while her appeal plays out.
With the case still bouncing between courts years after the original conviction, this is shaping up to be one of Malaysia's more drawn-out corruption sagas.
