Camp Mystic Owners Propose Selling the Flood-Hit Property

More than a year after a flood killed 27 campers and counselors, the owners of Camp Mystic are asking a bankruptcy court to let them sell the land. The century-old Christian girls' camp in the Texas Hill Country filed a Chapter 11 plan on September 25 that would auction roughly 749 acres and other assets. The owners say they hope a buyer will keep the camp's historic mission alive, though nothing in the plan actually requires that.

Victims' families are not sitting quietly. Their lawyers say they will fight to make sure any sale is fair and transparent, and the families have long opposed demolishing or repairing damaged buildings while their lawsuits continue. Earlier this month, state police also sought search warrants that mention possible manslaughter and child abandonment, although no charges have been filed. Martin Romualdez Asks Court for Bail in P7.44-Billion Plunder Case

In the Philippines, former House Speaker Martin Romualdez is asking for temporary freedom. On Monday his lawyers filed a bail petition with the Sandiganbayan's Third Division, shortly after noon, in the plunder case tied to the flood control corruption scandal. Prosecutors allege he received about 7.44 billion pesos in kickbacks from infrastructure projects between 2022 and 2025.

Plunder is normally non-bailable, so the defense must argue the evidence is not strong. Their 67-page filing says the case rests on a chain of inferences, points to witnesses who later recanted, and stresses he is no flight risk because he has cooperated with the court. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in a Quezon City jail. Hearings begin October 12 and will run on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, with prosecutors planning 23 witnesses.
