Airport transport involves an unusual trade-off between price and certainty. Travellers can compare the train with buses, e-hailing or driving, but the train's strongest selling point is predictability. Kuala Lumpur traffic can turn an inexpensive road journey into a stressful experience when a flight departure time is approaching.
That means the fare increase should not be considered solely as an extra RM10. Passengers will ask whether reliability, frequency, cleanliness and convenience continue to justify the premium.
The proposed discounts could become important. Flexible digital promotions for families, frequent airport workers, tourists and advance purchasers would make the headline RM65 price less intimidating while allowing ERL to maintain its standard fare.
There is also room for better bundling. Airline tickets, hotel reservations or tourism passes combined with airport rail could produce more attractive effective prices. If the service remains exceptionally dependable, many passengers will probably continue paying for the certainty.
