Bipartisan Senators Call Trump's Russian Diesel Deal a 'Betrayal' of Ukraine

Opposition to President Trump's diesel agreement with Russia is growing inside Congress, and it is not limited to one party. CBS News reports that bipartisan senators have called the deal a betrayal of Ukraine, while the Kyiv Post says 12 senators signed a bipartisan letter urging Trump to rescind it.

The deal, announced after a call between Trump and Vladimir Putin, would allow large volumes of Russian diesel to reach the U.S. and global markets while easing sanctions rules. Supporters argue that it could ease fuel prices, which have risen since the war involving Iran disrupted global energy supplies. Critics say it rewards Moscow and weakens the pressure that sanctions are meant to create.

The Kyiv Post's summary also points to a sanctions law, described as the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which it says Trump signed about three weeks before striking the deal. If accurate, that timing gives opponents an easy argument about consistency: a law passed to increase pressure on Russia, followed within weeks by a deal that eases it. I have only seen a summary of that point, so readers should check the letter itself.

What happens next depends on whether lawmakers move beyond letters. They could try to pass legislation, restrict funding or hold hearings, but any such effort would need to overcome political and procedural obstacles. The White House is likely to defend the deal as practical and beneficial for consumers. Ukraine's leader has already criticised it, and the strikes on Ukrainian energy sites continue. Watch for whether more senators sign on, how the administration responds, and whether the licence underpinning the arrangement is altered.
