Malaysia to Raise Haze at ASEAN Meeting as Cost of Closures Mounts

Malaysia is taking the haze problem to the regional stage. Headlines on The Sun's website say Malaysia will raise the haze issue at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, and a separate report refers to Malaysia aiming to give transboundary haze 'disaster' status at the ASEAN meeting. Another headline notes that Indonesia has welcomed Singapore's help and that Malaysia has offered assistance to tackle the fires.

The case for regional action is easy to understand. Smoke does not respect borders, and the costs are shared. An opinion piece in The Sun points to education as one example, noting that Sarawak's education department confirmed the closure of 591 schools in late August, affecting more than 197,000 pupils. Add health costs, flight disruption and lost working hours, and the economic burden becomes substantial.

Giving haze a 'disaster' designation could, in theory, help mobilise faster coordination and resources, although the exact meaning and effect of such a status at ASEAN level would depend on the details agreed by the members. That is why the wording of any joint statement will be worth reading closely when the meeting takes place.

Diplomacy of this kind is slow, and it depends on goodwill between neighbours. Indonesia has said it is willing to accept help, which is a positive sign. For Malaysians breathing hazy air, however, what matters is results: fires put out, fewer unhealthy readings and fewer school closures. Watch for concrete commitments on firefighting support, monitoring and prevention rather than only general statements of concern. Readers can also follow updates from their national weather agencies and the regional meteorological centre.
