BN to Reveal Melaka Candidates on October 28 as Ab Rauf Seeks to Defend 2021 Landslide

Barisan Nasional (BN) will announce its list of candidates for the Melaka state election on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, according to Melaka BN chairman and caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. The announcement comes just three days before nomination day on October 31. Ab Rauf said earlier this month that BN’s line-up was complete and that the party’s preparations had entered their final stage, including negotiations with other parties on electoral cooperation and seat allocation.

BN is defending a commanding position. In the 2021 election it won 21 of the 28 state seats, enough to form the government without partners, while Pakatan Harapan won five and Perikatan Nasional two. Ab Rauf has said the candidates will carry a heavy responsibility to continue the mandate and ensure the party’s victory. BN has also said it is open to cooperation talks and to the use of its coalition logo in the polls, leaving the door open to arrangements with other groupings.

The wider political picture is fluid. BN is part of the federal unity government with PH, yet the Melaka contest could see the partners compete against each other, as DAP pulled out of the state administration in July. Reports have referred to talks on a possible arrangement dubbed PH Plus and to cooperation with the PN-linked parties, and all three major coalitions have said they are open to working with each other. Earlier this year BN won state elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan comfortably.

UMNO leaders have also been watching a separate constitutional dispute in Negeri Sembilan, which analysts say could affect Malay-Muslim sentiment ahead of the vote. Local issues such as tourism, infrastructure and living costs are expected to feature strongly in the campaign.

What to watch: the number of seats BN keeps for itself versus partners, the inclusion of new faces, and whether BN signals an understanding with PH or PN-linked parties before nomination papers are filed.
