Another deadly road crash has hit Kenya. ABC News carries an Associated Press report that 22 people were killed in a bus crash near the site of a previous fatal accident. The report was posted about seven hours before I fetched the page, and I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the location, the cause or whether others were injured.
The detail that the crash happened near the site of an earlier fatal accident suggests a stretch of road that may be dangerous. Black spots on highways often have common features, such as sharp bends, steep slopes, poor lighting, damaged surfaces or heavy traffic, and authorities sometimes respond with warning signs, speed limits or road improvements. I have not seen what the Kenyan authorities have said about this particular location.
Road safety is a serious problem in many countries. Overloaded or poorly maintained vehicles, speeding, fatigue and lack of enforcement can contribute to crashes, and long-distance buses often carry many passengers, so a single accident can cause many deaths. The World Health Organization has repeatedly highlighted the toll of road traffic injuries, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
For travellers, simple measures can help: choose reputable operators, wear seatbelts if provided, avoid travelling at night where possible and speak up if a driver is driving dangerously. For policymakers, improving roads, enforcing speed limits and inspecting vehicles are key. Our condolences go to the families of the victims. Watch for the official investigation, which may identify the cause, and for any announcements about safety measures on the road where the crash happened.
