The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Sarawak government have agreed to partner on developing a smart city ecosystem in Greater Kuching, Bernama reports. It is one of several digital announcements involving Sarawak this week, including funding for connectivity under the JENDELA programme.
A smart city is usually described as a city that uses technology and data to improve services, such as managing traffic, monitoring air quality, improving public transport, handling waste and making government services more accessible. The idea has become common around the world, though results vary. Successful projects typically focus on solving specific local problems rather than collecting technology for its own sake.
I have only seen the headline, so details about the scope, budget, timeline and technologies are not available to me. The partnership between a national regulator and a state government suggests a focus on connectivity and digital infrastructure, but the final plans will determine what residents actually notice in daily life. Readers can look for official briefings and project documents.
Smart city projects also raise important questions. How will personal data be collected and protected? Who owns the data? How will the benefits reach people who do not have smartphones or fast internet? Good projects consult residents, publish privacy rules and ensure that services remain available to everyone. Greater Kuching has grown quickly, and local authorities face familiar urban challenges such as traffic and drainage. If the plan is carefully designed, it could provide practical improvements. Watch for pilot projects, public consultations and announcements of technology partners.
