Schroeder Reportedly Celebrates Putin's Birthday, Reigniting Questions About Europe's Russia Ties

Some stories are less about what happened and more about what it symbolises. Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder reportedly celebrated Vladimir Putin's birthday in Russia, and the news has revived uncomfortable questions about the relationship between European elites and the Kremlin.

Schroeder has long been criticised in Germany for his business and personal links with Russia, including roles in energy-related companies after leaving office. Supporters have framed those ties as private and professional, but critics argue that a former head of government should be more careful when Russia is waging a war in Ukraine.

The timing is awkward. On the same day, Ukraine's president was publicly accusing the United States of doing too little as large Russian strikes reportedly killed dozens. Against that backdrop, a former chancellor raising a glass with Moscow's leader looks, to many Europeans, like a moral misjudgement, whatever the personal intent may have been.

It is worth remembering that Schroeder no longer holds office, so this is not government policy. Even so, symbolism matters in politics, and it can shape public perceptions of how closely certain figures are still tied to a country that much of Europe now regards as an adversary. Expect German commentators and politicians to react, and expect the story to be used in wider arguments about energy dependence, accountability and the legacy of earlier policy choices.

Europe is still working out how to balance old relationships with new realities. Moments like this become small tests of that adjustment, revealing how far public tolerance has shifted since the war began.
