Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute on 29 September for observation, according to his son Mokhzani Mahathir. The family says there is no cause for concern. The decision was made so doctors could monitor him after what Mokhzani called two very stressful days.
The 101-year-old lost his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, on 28 September. They were married on 5 August 1956 and marked 70 years together this year. His office said he was exhausted and had not slept well, and that he was resting at the hospital.
Another son, Mukhriz Mahathir, said earlier that Dr Mahathir had stayed at the institute throughout his wife's treatment before she passed away. Reports note that he has a history of heart ailments, including bypass surgery in 1989 and 2007, and that he was also admitted in January this year after a fall at home.
The family's message is reassuring, and there is no indication of a serious change in his condition. The respectful approach is to rely on statements from the family or his office and to avoid sharing rumours. Any further health update will most likely come through official channels rather than social media.
