Four Corners Region Faces More Flood Threats After Days of Heavy Rain

Heavy rain has put communities in the southwestern United States on alert. CBS News reports that the Four Corners region, where Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico meet, faces more flood threats following days of heavy rain. The story was posted about four hours before I fetched the page, and I have only seen the headline and summary, so I do not know the affected counties or the extent of any damage.

Floods in arid regions can be especially dangerous. Dry ground cannot absorb sudden downpours, so water runs quickly into canyons, washes and rivers and can create flash floods with little warning. Burn scars from earlier wildfires and steep terrain make the risk higher. Roads can be washed out, and vehicles can be swept away by water that looks shallow.

Weather extremes have been in the news worldwide this week. The Pacific has set a record for big hurricanes during a strong El Niño, parts of Malaysia are under continuous rain warnings and flash floods in Penang, and a typhoon recently hit Taiwan. Scientists generally caution against blaming one event on one cause, but they note that a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, which can increase the intensity of rainfall in some areas.

For people in flood-prone areas, the standard advice applies: monitor official weather warnings, avoid driving through flooded roads, move to higher ground if told to evacuate and keep an emergency kit with essentials. Campers and hikers should avoid canyons during storms. Watch for updates from the National Weather Service, for any evacuation orders and for reports on road closures and damage. Communities in the region may need time to recover and to assess the effects on homes, farms and infrastructure.
