Two items from the Alaska Senate race have appeared on CBS News's world page. In an interview on Face the Nation, Attorney General Todd Blanche said that the Justice Department is doing its own research with an Alaska challenge involving Senator Dan Sullivan, according to the headline. Separately, the network reports that Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola sustained minor injuries in a car accident. I have only seen the headlines, so I do not know the details of the legal issue or the accident.
Challenge is a broad word, and I cannot say whether it refers to a legal case, a dispute over election rules or something else. The statement that the department is doing its own research suggests that officials are looking into the issue independently, which may mean that they are not relying only on the claims of parties to the case. Readers should consult the full transcript for context.
Mary Peltola's accident occurred while she is campaigning against the incumbent, and the headline says her injuries are minor. Campaign schedules are often demanding, with long travel in a state as large as Alaska, and accidents can affect events. I do not know the circumstances of the crash, and I will not speculate. We wish her a quick recovery.
The Alaska race is one of several contests that could help to decide the balance of power in the Senate. In a period of heightened attention to election procedures, with lawsuits about mail ballots and noncitizen voting also in the news, statements by the attorney general are likely to be scrutinised by both parties. Watch for any filing or announcement by the Justice Department, for news on Peltola's recovery and for new polls in the state. Voters can find official information on registration and voting from Alaska's election authorities.
