Haze: 12 Areas Record Unhealthy API Readings at 10 Am, With Serian Highest

The haze is still affecting parts of Malaysia. Bernama reports that 12 areas recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index readings at 10 am today, with Serian in Sarawak recording the highest. I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the exact readings or the list of affected areas.

An unhealthy reading generally means that the air can affect the health of the general population, with sensitive groups such as children, older people and those with heart or lung disease affected more. The fact that Serian is the highest suggests that Sarawak is bearing the brunt, in contrast to earlier weeks when peninsular states were more affected. Smoke levels depend on wind direction and the fires' location.

The haze comes from forest and peat fires in Indonesia, which have also led to more than 333,000 cases of acute respiratory infection there, according to Bernama's reports. Foreign firefighting assistance has been waiting on Indonesia's declaration of national disaster, and Prime Minister Anwar has said that Malaysia remains ready to help. Sarawak has also been adding two new air quality monitoring stations to improve local data.

For residents, sensible steps include checking the official API readings regularly, limiting strenuous outdoor activity when the air is unhealthy, wearing a well-fitted mask outdoors and keeping windows closed. People with asthma should keep medication handy and seek medical advice if symptoms get worse. Schools make decisions about closures based on readings, with three ministries involved. Watch for updates on rain, which can help to clear the air, and for developments in Indonesia's firefighting efforts.
