Anwar: Reject Politics of Hatred and Strengthen Unity for Stability

The Prime Minister has issued a similar appeal to the Selangor Sultan's. Bernama reports that Anwar Ibrahim called on Malaysians to reject the politics of hatred and strengthen unity for stability. The report was published about eleven hours before I fetched the page, and I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the setting for the remarks.

The message appears on Bernama's list of the Prime Minister's stories along with others, such as a statement on the Waze ban and an announcement that a global investor chose Malaysia for a US$50 billion investment in the technology sector. The latter point is relevant, because investors usually value political stability and social harmony, and leaders often link unity to economic success.

The timing is notable, with the Melaka election nominations on 31 October and a dispute within the BN coalition over candidates. In an election season, parties may use emotive messages to attract supporters, and politicians sometimes warn that doing so can inflame tensions. Anwar's statement does not name any party in the headline, and I cannot say whether it is aimed at a specific group.

Practical steps for citizens include supporting inclusive community events, checking facts before sharing and speaking up against hate speech. Schools and religious institutions can foster dialogue among different groups. Earlier this week, Anwar also called for a stronger understanding of nationhood and national identity. Watch for how parties respond to the appeal during the campaign, and for any laws or guidelines on hate speech. Unity does not require uniformity, but it requires respect.

Sultan Sharafuddin: Keep Race and Religion Out of Politics

The Sultan of Selangor has made a clear call about political discourse. Bernama reports that Sultan Sharafuddin said that race and religion should be kept out of politics. I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the occasion or whether he mentioned any specific events or elections.

The statement comes as a state election in Melaka is approaching, with nominations on 31 October. Malaysian politics has often involved appeals to race and religion, and leaders from different sides have warned that such tactics can damage social harmony. This week, the Prime Minister urged the public to reject the politics of hatred, the Melaka Chief Minister warned against hate politics and a religious foundation cautioned against using religious terms to demean individuals.

The comments of a ruler carry particular weight because Malaysia's rulers are seen as symbols of unity above party politics. The Sultan of Selangor is also celebrating his Silver Jubilee, and commemorative items and a large royal tea reception took place earlier this week. In that context, a message about unity fits the spirit of the occasion.

What can citizens do? Think before sharing political content online, check facts, avoid using racial or religious slurs and engage with people who hold different views respectfully. Parties and candidates can contribute by focusing on issues such as jobs, prices, education and infrastructure. The Election Commission and the police have powers to act against campaigning that breaks the law. Watch for how the campaign unfolds after nomination day, and for any further royal or government statements on the subject.
