Indonesia Records More Than 333,000 Acute Respiratory Infection Cases as Fires Rage in Several Regions

The health toll of the fires and haze in Indonesia is becoming clearer. Bernama's world desk reports that Indonesia has recorded more than 333,000 cases of acute respiratory infection as fires rage in several regions. The report was published about 32 minutes before I fetched the page, and I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the period covered or which provinces are worst affected.

Acute respiratory infections can include conditions such as bronchitis, pneumonia and flare-ups of asthma, and smoke from forest and peat fires is known to irritate the lungs and worsen existing conditions. Children, older people and those with heart or lung disease are particularly vulnerable. A figure above 333,000 suggests a very large number of people seeking treatment, although not every case will necessarily be caused by the smoke.

The same fires have affected Malaysia, where schools in several states have been closed and the education minister has said that three ministries will decide on closures while the haze persists. Foreign firefighting assistance to Indonesia has been waiting for a declaration of national disaster, and Prime Minister Anwar has said that Malaysia is ready to help. Singapore has also rolled out medical subsidies for haze-related treatment.

For people in affected areas, the standard advice is to limit time outdoors when air quality is poor, wear a well-fitted mask when going out, keep windows closed and use air purifiers if available. Seek medical help if you have persistent coughing, difficulty breathing or chest pain. Readers in Malaysia can check the official Air Pollutant Index and follow school and local announcements. Watch for the government's response in Indonesia, for any change in weather that could bring rain and for updates on foreign assistance.
