Sarawak to Become the Regional Hub of AIAC for Borneo From Next Year, Says Azalina

Sarawak is set to play a bigger role in dispute resolution. Bernama's latest headlines quote Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said as saying that the state will become the regional hub of the Asian International Arbitration Centre for Borneo starting next year. I have only seen the headline, so I do not know where in Sarawak the hub will be located or what services it will offer.

The Asian International Arbitration Centre is a Kuala Lumpur-based institution that provides arbitration, mediation and related services for commercial disputes. Arbitration is a way of resolving disputes outside the courts, often faster and more flexibly, and it is widely used in international business contracts. A regional hub would bring those services closer to businesses in Sarawak, Sabah and neighbouring areas.

Why does it matter? Sarawak has been growing its economy through energy, green industries, digital infrastructure and resource-based sectors, and its smart city plans and connectivity projects are moving ahead. Businesses that invest there want confidence that disputes can be resolved fairly and efficiently. A local arbitration hub could support that confidence, and it may also create opportunities for local lawyers and professionals.

For small and medium enterprises, arbitration can be less costly than court litigation, though it is not free, and it is important to include clear arbitration clauses in contracts. If you do business in Borneo, ask a lawyer whether such clauses are suitable for your agreements. Watch for details on the date the hub starts, its location, the staff and training programmes. The announcement is also a sign of cooperation between the federal and state governments on legal and economic infrastructure.
