Amir Hamzah Urges Alumni to Support Their Schools, Highlights Tax Incentive, and Says Budget 2027 Will Lift High-Value Industries

Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan has been promoting two themes from Budget 2027. BernamaBiz reports that he urged alumni to increase their support for schools and highlighted a tax incentive, while a second report quotes him as saying the budget will boost Malaysia's competitiveness in high-value industries.

The school support message is aimed at former students who may want to contribute to the institutions where they studied. Donations to approved bodies, including schools, are often eligible for tax deductions, and the government is encouraging more giving to help with facilities, scholarships and programmes. I have not seen the details of the incentive, so alumni who are interested should check the rules and the approved recipients before donating.

The high-value industries comment fits with the budget's focus on moving up the value chain. Malaysia wants to attract investment in areas such as advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, digital services and green technology, which tend to provide higher-paying jobs. Earlier this month, the EU said it supports Malaysia's efforts to move up the semiconductor value chain, and officials have spoken about reducing overdependence on a narrow set of sectors.

For ordinary people, the two messages come together in education and skills. Better-funded schools can help produce graduates who are ready for higher-value work. Alumni associations can play a significant role by organising donations, mentoring and career talks. If you are a graduate, consider contacting your old school to find out how you can help, and check that any fundraising is run by a recognised body. Watch for further announcements on tax incentives and for the details of programmes aimed at developing talent for new industries.
