Negeri Sembilan's political crisis is entering a new phase. Malaysiakini reports that the state is in an impasse after its ruler, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, revoked the appointments of 10 exco members following what the report calls an attempted coup, leaving Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim to lead the government without an executive council. DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said there is no reason to delay appointing new excos, noting that many administrative matters require exco approval.
The Menteri Besar has indicated he will appoint excos 'one at a time', and has started by appointing village chiefs, according to Malaysiakini headlines. Meanwhile, the former excos have sought a court declaration on whether their removal was valid, which means the courts may be asked to interpret the state constitution. Another headline says Jalaluddin denied a no-confidence motion against the Menteri Besar, with Zahid giving assurance.
There is also a ceremonial dimension. The Sun reports that Tuanku Muhriz will not attend the Conference of Rulers meeting scheduled for 13 to 15 October so that he can focus on state affairs, especially the ceremony for the appointment of the Undang of Jelebu. The last state election was held on 1 August.
For residents, the question is how daily governance continues without a full executive council. Approvals for land, projects and local matters often depend on exco decisions, so delays could be felt. For observers, the case may become an important test of how the constitution balances the authority of a ruler, the Menteri Besar and elected representatives. Watch for the court's response and the Menteri Besar's next appointments.
