Trump's Russian Diesel Deal Draws Fire: Kyiv Calls It a Gift to Putin

President Donald Trump's announcement of a Russian diesel supply deal is still sparking fierce debate. Speaking after a call with Vladimir Putin on 9 October, Trump said Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global marketplace. Reports say further volumes are planned, with 500,000 tons in November and larger amounts after that, and the U.S. Treasury has issued a licence allowing Russian-origin diesel transactions until 7 April 2027.

The politics are impossible to ignore. AFP notes the deal comes weeks before U.S. midterm elections, at a time when fuel prices have risen since late February, when U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran led Tehran to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has blamed Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries for the price rise, though AFP points out that the war with Iran has been the main disruption to global energy supplies.

Ukraine's reaction was sharp. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the move weak and unworthy, saying Washington eased sanctions without securing a ceasefire, and a Ukrainian official told Axios that Kyiv had not been informed in advance. Axios reports Zelensky had ignored repeated U.S. requests to stop refinery strikes, and that Kyiv has said it would stop them if Russia stops attacking Ukraine's power plants.

The key question is whether easing sanctions for fuel will weaken the pressure on Moscow. Supporters argue that lower energy prices help households and markets. Critics warn it rewards Russia during a war. Both are likely to continue arguing as peace talks proceed separately. Readers should watch for whether Russia lifts its own diesel export restrictions and whether the talks produce any real energy truce.
