109 Foreigners Detained in Two Immigration Operations in Ipoh

The Immigration Department has carried out two operations in Perak's capital. Bernama reports that 109 foreigners were held in the operations in Ipoh. I have only seen the headline, so I do not know their nationalities, the offences, the premises raided or when the operations took place.

Immigration operations typically check the documents of foreign nationals at workplaces, residential areas and entertainment spots, and detain those found without valid permits or in breach of the terms of their visas. Employers and landlords can also face action if they are found to have hired or housed undocumented migrants. People who are detained are processed under immigration laws and may be deported after proceedings.

The Ipoh raids follow a series of enforcement actions around the country, including one in Janda Baik that detained 65 foreign nationals, and a raid in Kuala Lumpur in which 53 Chinese nationals were among 55 people arrested. Together they show regular enforcement, though I do not know how they compare to previous months.

Foreign workers are an important part of many Malaysian industries, from construction to plantations to services, and the government has linked the discussion of foreign worker levies to productivity and automation in Budget 2027. Rights groups argue that migrants should be treated humanely and that exploitation by agents and employers should be punished. For employers, the best approach is to hire through legal channels and keep proper records. Watch for statements from the Immigration Department on charges and for further operations. Anyone who is unsure about the status of a worker should check with the department before hiring.
