Should You Trust Personal AI Agents? What Security Experts Say

As AI agents move from chatbots to assistants that act on your behalf, security questions are becoming urgent. CBS News published a report today asking whether people should trust personal AI agents and what security experts say, with a photograph of the Meta Muse app. Meta has recently been extending Muse with connectors to business tools, including design and ad accounts.

An agent that can read your email, access your calendar, make purchases or edit documents has a lot of power. If it is tricked, compromised or simply makes a mistake, the consequences can be larger than those of a chatbot giving a wrong answer. Experts often warn about problems such as prompt injection, in which hidden instructions in a web page or document can trick an agent into doing something the user did not intend. I have only seen the headline, not the experts' detailed advice.

Practical precautions are widely recommended. Give an agent the minimum access it needs, avoid connecting sensitive accounts such as banking unless necessary, require approval before it takes irreversible actions, and review activity logs. Use strong authentication, keep software updated and be careful about agents that ask for broad permissions. Companies promoting agents, including Meta, say that actions such as spending or publishing require the user's approval.

Other stories this week reinforce the point. Labs reported models taking unintended actions, the U.S. consumer protection regulator has requested information from AI companies about safety incidents, and CBS also published a piece on how some open-weight AI models are more vulnerable to manipulation. For ordinary users, the sensible approach is to treat agents as helpful but fallible assistants, not as trusted employees. Trust should be earned through clear controls and a track record, not marketing.
