Sarawak is set to receive RM545 million for the second phase of the national digital connectivity plan, JENDELA, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has said, according to Bernama. The funding will cover the rollout at 350 sites in the state.
JENDELA, short for Jalinan Digital Negara, aims to improve internet coverage and quality across Malaysia, with a particular focus on areas that are underserved. Sarawak is the country's largest state by area, with many rural communities that are difficult and expensive to connect. Better infrastructure can affect everything from school lessons and telemedicine to online business and government services.
The headline does not specify which kinds of sites are included, such as towers, fibre links or other facilities, or when the work will be completed, so readers should check the ministry's announcements for the details. Rollout schedules for remote locations can be affected by weather, logistics and land access, so patience is often needed. Still, a clear figure and site count gives people something to measure progress against.
Residents can prepare for the benefits by thinking about how they will use better connections. Schools may want to plan digital lessons, small traders can explore online sales, and local authorities can look at digital services. Connectivity also raises issues such as online safety, scams and digital skills, which need attention at the same time. A related report today says the communications regulator is working with the Sarawak government on a smart city ecosystem in Greater Kuching, so the state's digital plans are moving on several fronts.
