Malaysia's film industry is talking about growth. Bernama published a feature titled The Next Act for Malaysian Cinema: Bigger Audiences, Bolder Ambitions, listed under the Communications Ministry's stories. I have only seen the headline, so I do not know which filmmakers, figures or box office results the feature covers, and I will not invent them.
The theme fits a busy week for the sector. The Anugerah Seri Angkasa honoured veteran actor Rahim Razali and awarded a Creative Content Fund grant to the Best TV Drama winner, and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil spoke of embracing artificial intelligence without sacrificing the industry's workforce. The ministry has also been discussing creative cooperation with Indonesia, Singapore and Cambodia and has asked for intellectual property to be recognised as a bankable asset, which could help filmmakers to raise money.
Bigger audiences for local cinema depend on several things: stories that resonate, marketing, access to cinemas and streaming platforms and fair revenue sharing. Co-productions with neighbouring countries can widen markets, and awards and festivals can help to build reputations. Film classification rules also shape what can be shown, as the ministry reminded the public this week when it said that an age rating is not a licence for unrestricted content.
For audiences, the best way to support local films is to watch them in cinemas or on legal platforms and to share recommendations. For aspiring filmmakers, there are funds, training programmes and competitions that may help to start a career, and it is worth following the ministry and the national film agency for announcements. Watch for upcoming local releases, for results of the grants and for any new schemes aimed at helping filmmakers to reach regional and global audiences.
