Higher Tax Relief Means More Take-Home Pay for the M40 From January

Middle-income earners may see a small boost to their monthly income. Bernama reports that the higher tax relief announced in Budget 2027 will mean more take-home pay for the M40 group from January. Earlier coverage of the budget said that individual tax relief will increase from RM9,000 to RM12,000, starting with the 2027 assessment year.

How could that translate into take-home pay from January? In Malaysia, employers deduct monthly tax instalments from salaries, called PCB or monthly tax deductions, based on rules from the Inland Revenue Board. If the tax relief rises, the formula for these deductions can change, so employees pay less tax each month, even though the final tax for the year is settled when returns are filed. I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the exact amounts for different income levels.

The M40 is the middle 40 per cent of households by income, a group that often feels squeezed by living costs but does not receive some targeted cash assistance. A higher relief gives them a way to benefit through the tax system. Whether the gain is large or small depends on a person's income, tax bracket and other reliefs, and for some people the change may be modest.

What can you do? Check your payslip in January, and ask your employer's payroll team whether the deductions have been updated. Keep receipts for other reliefs, such as medical expenses, education and lifestyle claims, because they can reduce your final tax bill further. Use the Inland Revenue Board's official calculators and announcements, not social media summaries, for exact figures. Watch for the formal guidelines, which should set out how the monthly deductions will be adjusted.
