Penang Night Lane Closures on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah Run From 1 October to 15 November

Reported as of 1 October 2026 (Malaysia time). Details may change as stories develop.

Drivers on Penang island will see intermittent night-time lane closures along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah for 45 days, from 1 October to 15 November. They run from 10pm to 5am and are mainly to allow tree felling for the Mutiara Line LRT project, according to Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation.

The affected stretches include the leftmost lane heading towards Komtar between the Jalan Sungai Dua intersection and the USM field, the leftmost lane towards Bayan Lepas between the Batu Uban army camp and Sunny Point, and the rightmost lane in both directions near Batu Uban. All other lanes stay open, with signs, cones and flagmen guiding traffic.

The works are part of preparatory activity for a 29.5-kilometre line with 21 stations linking the island and the mainland, which has a completion deadline of December 2031. Separate long-term lane closures in Gelugor are scheduled from August 2026 to August 2029 for piling and pier construction.

For late-night shift workers, delivery riders and anyone driving to or from the airport and industrial zone, expect slower trips and allow extra time. Photographers heading out for night shoots around Bayan Lepas should also plan alternative routes, and check the project's traffic updates before leaving, since schedules can change at short notice.
