Reported as of 1 October 2026 (Malaysia time). Details may change as stories develop.
The East Coast Rail Link may begin carrying passengers as early as mid-December 2026, ahead of the original January 2027 target. Malay Mail's explainer notes that preparations are accelerating, with inspection trains deployed and final testing and operational readiness work under way.
The earlier timeline traces back to August, when Transport Minister Anthony Loke challenged the project's operator and its main contractor, China Communications Construction Company, to bring the start of operations forward. The network is described as capable of carrying up to 10,000 passengers a day and is expected to cut journey times between key destinations considerably.
For travellers, the interest is obvious. The line is meant to link the east coast with the Klang Valley, opening a new option for people heading to Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, and for tourists who would rather avoid long highway drives. Photographers and travel writers will see new routes into east-coast towns that are easier to reach without a car.
As always with large projects, dates can shift. Treat mid-December as a target rather than a promise until timetables and ticketing details are formally announced. Also keep an eye on whether the minister's expected departure from the Cabinet affects the project's final stretch.
