Haze Hangs Over a Packed Weekend: F1, Le Tour de Langkawi and KL Marathon Still On

Reported as of 1 October 2026 (Malaysia time). Details may change as stories develop.

Three headline events are scheduled for 2 to 4 October, and the government says all three are expected to proceed despite haze affecting parts of the country. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil told reporters on 30 September that the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, Le Tour de Langkawi and the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon remain on the calendar for now.

The air quality picture is not comfortable. By mid-morning on 30 September, at least 32 areas were reporting unhealthy Air Pollutant Index readings. The Youth and Sports Ministry will decide on each event according to day-to-day conditions, and officials noted that some rain has fallen from time to time.

On the cross-border front, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi raised the fires with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Malaysia has offered a water-bombing aircraft, three helicopters and 52 personnel to help put out forest and land fires, but Cabinet is still waiting for a formal response to a diplomatic note sent through Wisma Putra.

Anyone planning to run, ride or watch should check the latest API readings before leaving home, carry a mask suited to fine particles and listen to organisers' updates. Visitors should also expect heavier traffic around Sepang, Putrajaya and the Melaka to Muar stretch of the cycling route.
